Older homes, farmhouses, and rural properties often come with quirks—and one of the most common is uneven subfloors. Maybe it’s a little dip in the living room, or a slope in the hallway that makes a ball roll on its own. While it adds character, it can make homeowners nervous about installing new flooring.

At Popular Flooring Company, with locations across Iowa Park, TX, we’ve helped countless families in North Texas and Southern Oklahoma choose flooring that works beautifully—even when the subfloor isn’t perfectly level.

Why Uneven Subfloors Happen

Age of the Home: Older houses often shift over time.
Moisture Issues: Past leaks or humidity can cause boards to swell or sag.
Foundation Settling: In rural areas with clay soil, settling can be common.

The key thing to know? A slightly uneven subfloor doesn’t mean you can’t install new flooring—it just means choosing the right type and installation method.

Flooring Types That Work with Uneven Subfloors

1. Carpet

Carpet is one of the most forgiving flooring types for minor unevenness. The padding underneath helps smooth out imperfections, making dips and slopes less noticeable underfoot.

2. Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

LVP is durable and can handle some unevenness, especially with proper underlayment. It also “floats” over subfloors, meaning it doesn’t require a perfectly flat surface.

3. Laminate Flooring

Like LVP, laminate is a floating floor system. Small imperfections in subfloors are less of a problem, especially when paired with quality underlayment.

Professional Installation Matters

When dealing with uneven subfloors, DIY can be risky. A professional installer knows when to use underlayment, shims, or leveling compounds to create a smooth base for flooring. At Popular Flooring Company, our installation team has experience working in older and rural homes where “perfectly level” just isn’t realistic.

Tips for Homeowners

Identify Trouble Spots: Walk your home and note areas that slope or dip.
Don’t Ignore Moisture: If unevenness comes from water damage, fix the source first.
Consider Comfort: Carpet or cushioned underlayment can make floors feel smoother.
